In-Kind Distribution

What is In-Kind Distribution?

An in-kind distribution transfers the actual physical metal from your Gold IRA depository to you, rather than converting it to cash first. The custodian ships the bars or coins to your address; you own the metals personally outside the IRA after delivery. The full fair-market value of the metals on the distribution date is taxable as ordinary income, just as it would be for a cash distribution.

Why does in-kind distribution matter for Gold IRA investors?

In-kind distribution lets you avoid the 1-5% buyback spread that cash liquidation incurs. On a $100,000 distribution, that spread costs $1,000-$5,000. The trade-off is that you must handle physical security, insurance, and storage personally after delivery. For investors who want to continue holding gold post-retirement, in-kind preserves more value.
