Form W-4R
What is Form W-4R?
Form W-4R is the IRS form used to elect federal income tax withholding on nonperiodic IRA distributions. The default withholding rate for IRA distributions is 10%, but you can elect a higher rate, a lower rate, or zero withholding by submitting Form W-4R to your custodian. Qualified plan (401(k), 403(b)) distributions face mandatory 20% withholding that cannot be waived through Form W-4R.
Why does form w-4r matter for Gold IRA investors?
Knowing about Form W-4R helps you control cash flow on Gold IRA distributions. Default 10% withholding may be too low if you are in a high tax bracket, or too high if you have other tax credits offsetting the income. Filing Form W-4R lets you align withholding with your actual tax liability rather than absorbing default rates.
