Dealer Markup

What is Dealer Markup?

A dealer markup is the amount a precious metals dealer adds above the spot price when selling coins or bars. For Gold IRA purchases, markups typically run 3% to 10% above spot for bullion products, and far higher for premium or collectible coins. The markup is charged at purchase and is separate from custodian fees, storage fees, and the buyback spread charged when you sell. On a $50,000 purchase, a 5% markup costs $2,500 before any recurring fee is billed.

Why does dealer markup matter for Gold IRA investors?

The dealer markup is usually the single largest Gold IRA cost, yet it rarely appears on a fee schedule — it is built into the quoted metal price. Comparing per-ounce quotes against the spot price makes the markup visible before you commit.
